Program Overview

International Certificate Class of Taiwan Specialty Tea (Primary) is a course designed by Tea and Beverage Research Station, MOA (referred to as the TBRS) specifically for foreign individuals who wish to further understand Taiwan tea.

The course competency indicators include the ability to easily distinguish Taiwan specialty teas, flavor wheel, and tea regions. The course content includes: an overview of the Taiwan’s tea industry, understanding Taiwan specialty teas, how to brew Taiwan tea, and visits to Taiwan tea fields.

  • 12 hours in-person classes in the US.
  •  Taiwanese Tea Sensory Evaluation Learning Manual and Practice Test
  • Provide 10 specialty teas practicing in class, additional Fine Tea leaning practice kits are available if you want to purchase your own.

Enrollment is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who wish to deepen their understanding of Taiwanese specialty tea.

  • Roasted Ball-Shaped Oolong Tea (Tongding Oolong tea, Tieh-Kuan-Yin tea, Red Oolong Tea)
  • Oriental Beauty Tea
  • Taiwan Black Tea (Large-leaf black tea, Small-leaf black tea, Honey Flavor Black Tea (Muscatel Flavor Black Tea)
Tea Sensory Evaluation for Taiwan Teas(3 hours)

Experience the essence of Taiwan’s specialty teas through sight, scent, and taste. In this class, we’ll explore how terroir and craftsmanship shape each tea’s unique aroma, flavor, and texture. Through guided tastings and sensory exercises, you’ll learn to evaluate tea with confidence and connect each cup to its origin. Perfect for tea lovers and beginners alike, this class offers a mindful journey into Taiwan’s rich tea culture.

Visit to Taiwan Tea Fields (8 hours)

The Tea and Beverage Research Station (TBRS) plans the places to visit (tea culture training centers in various places), and students can choose freely.

Steps to obtain certification

Students who wish to earn the Tea Sensory Evaluation Certificate must complete all required courses and fulfill the certification criteria.

  • Brewing essentials of Taiwan tea (1 hour)
  • Introduction to Taiwan Tea Art (1 hour)
  • Experience practice of Tea banquet (1 hour)

 Need to complete the 12-hour course and score 70 points (inclusive) or above in the academic test to obtain the ” International Certificate Class of Taiwan Specialty Tea (Primary) Certificate of Training”.

Students must complete the 12-hour course and achieve a score of 70 or above on the academic test. The Certificate of Training will be issued in digital format and sent directly to your email account

  • Practical visit to specialty tea fields (8 hours)

The Tea and Beverage Research Station (TBRS) plans the places to visit (tea culture training centers in various places), and students can choose freely.

Enrollment is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who wish to deepen their understanding of Taiwanese specialty tea.

Our classes include two parts. Students can order class materials and join the online sessions for guided learning and demonstrations. However, to qualify for the Tea Sensory Evaluation Certificate, students must attend the in-person tasting training.
Class locations and dates will be arranged in collaboration with our partner institutes and announced via email once confirmed.

Go to the course listing you want on our website and click on register. This will take you to our registration system. 

Community members and faculty/staff/alumni may pay with a credit card.  Students still need to register for the class through the Active Networks system to pay for the class fee.

To obtain the “International Certificate Class of Taiwan Specialty Tea (Primary) – Certificate of Training,” students must complete the 12-hour course and achieve a score of 70 or above on the academic test. The Certificate of Training will be issued in digital format and sent directly to your email account. Students must present this certificate to continue to the 8-hour tea field experience. It is valid for two years, and only those who complete the entire series are eligible to receive the TBRS Certificate.

Participate in an 8-hour Taiwan tea field experience course, and upload reflections and photos or videos to the dedicated platform. Those who meet the standards will receive the electronic version of the ” Certificate for International Certificate Class of Taiwan Specialty Tea (Primary)”

If you cancel at least 7 days before the first class, you will receive a refund minus a $35 fee. No refunds starting 6 days before the workshop begins. You can transfer to a different available class or workshop in the same session to avoid the cancellation fee.  

After enrolling, students will receive detailed instructions by email on how to access the class materials. All materials can be ordered online before the class begins. For online sessions, digital resources and study guides will be provided through the course platform. For in-person sessions, printed materials and tasting kits will be distributed at the class location.
